Stable Isotope Laboratory

The mass spectrometry lab is a research facility of the Department of Geological Sciences at the University of South Carolina. At present the lab is equipped with a VG Optima Stable Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometer (SIRMS).  The Optima has two preparation lines for measuring carbon and oxygen isotopic composition: a combination 44-sample carbonate carousel and acid bath which allows direct CO2 generation from loaded samples, and a 10-port manifold for ampuled gas analysis.  In addition the Optima is linked to a Fisons Elemental Analyzer, which allows for rapid isotope ratio analyses of carbon and nitrogen in organic substances and fluids.

If you have any questions about the facility feel free to contact Sasha Prokopenko.
