Stable Isotope Laboratory
The mass spectrometry lab is equipped with an Elementar Isoprime and a VG Optima Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometer. The Isoprime is attached to a dual micro-inlet and a Multicarb sample prep module capable of running 60 automated samples of carbonate or water. The Isoprime is also connected to a EuroVector EA3024 with an 80 position autosampler for analysis of N15 and C13 of organics. The EA is also connected to a diluter allowing for the sequential analysis of Carbon and Nitrogen. The Optima has two
preparation lines for measuring carbon and oxygen isotopic composition: a combination
44-sample carbonate carousel and acid bath which allows direct CO2 generation from loaded
samples, and a 10-port manifold for ampuled gas analysis. In addition the Optima is
linked to a Fisons Elemental Analyzer, which allows for rapid isotope ratio analyses of
carbon and nitrogen in organic substances and fluids.
