This project builds upon preliminary research conducted in Tierra del Fuego since 2005 and will consist of three years of field and laboratory work (2007-2010) related to geological samples collected throughout the Antarctic Peninsula, the Scotia Sea, and southernmost South America. Details from this fieldwork, including daily journal entries, photos, and digital video will be posted on the Field Work, Journals, and Photos pages. If you are interested in receiving periodic (weekly?) emails with text and photos updating the progress of our investigations and adventures, you can subscribe to the SCOTIA listserv by sending an email to: scotiaplatesgates@gmail.com.
The first of these efforts is a ten-week field season on the Antarctic Peninsula, in the southern Scotia Sea, and in Tierra del Fuego of Argentina and Chile from November 20, 2007 – February 1, 2008. During the first phase of this field season, Barbeau and three students will travel aboard the R/V Laurence McKinley Gould on cruise LMG07-17 from Punta Arenas, Chile to locations in the northern Antarctic Peninsula and adjacent islands. Upon return to Punta Arenas in late December, the field team will collect additional samples from Argentina and Chile with the assistance of collaborators Eduardo Olivero and Stefan Kraus through the end of January 2008.
