Green House Gases

Question

Does an increase in greenhouse gas concentration result in higher atmospheric temperatures?

Materials

3  350ml flask

air line tubing

bucket of water

Alka-Seltzer

lamp

2 temperature probes

rubber stoppers

Methods

We filled one flask with CO2 using the gas from dissolved Alka-Seltzer, and a second flask with atmospheric air. A temperature probe was placed in each flask, and both flasks were placed in front of a bright lamp.

    detailed description of methods used

Hypothesis

The Temperature will be higher inside the flask enriched with CO2 than in the flask containing air.

Results

The flask with CO2 started off cooler than the flask with air. After 10 minutes the temperature inside the flask with CO2 was higher than inside flask with air.

Conclusions

CO2 is a greenhouse gas and increases in green house gases can cause global warming.
