Ship Terminology

 

Being on a ship is sometimes like being in another country.  There are all sorts of new words to learn.  Below are just a few:

 
Aft:  Is a direction meaning to the rear

Bow:  The Front of the Ship

Bulk Head:  The walls of the ship

Fantail:  The back deck of the ship

Fore:  Is a direction meaning to the front

Galley:  The Kitchen

Hatch:  Doors that connect one level to another

Head: The Bathroom

 Port:  The left side of the ship when looking towards the Bow

Port Hole: A round window that opens

Port Light:  A round window that does NOT open

Starboard:  The right side of the ship when looking towards the Bow

Stateroom:  Our bed rooms

Stern: The Back of the Ship

The 01 Deck:  The 2nd level above seawater
