The R/V Wecoma was our research ship for our second adventure. It's a bit smaller than the KOK, only 185 feet long and 36 feet wide. It typically carries 12 crew, 1 marine technician, and up to 15 scientists. Let Sponge Bob introduce you to the crew... |
| The Bridge
Meet the captain (he's in the baseball cap), the 2nd mate, Gary, and the 1st mate, Rick. They drive the ship and make sure we take our samples in exactly the right place (i.e. latitude and longitude). |
| The Engine Room
Here's Chip, Bob (the Chief Engineer), and Hank. They keep the engine running smoothly. Notice that everyone is wearing ear muffs --even Sponge Bob! It's loud down there.

The "Dog" House
Doug and Boe are AB's (Able Bodied Seaman) run the winch and help us deploy our instruments. They are the guys who do the day-to-day maintenance around the boat (i.e. painting, cleaning, etc.)
|
|
Here's John, another AB, cleaning the Bow (the front) of the ship with freshwater (Notice our exercise bike?). |
|
The Galley (Kitchen)
Doug and Aaron are the ship's cooks. They cook us fantastic meals and always have tasty snacks for us when we work late at night. |
|
The Electronics Lab
Marc is our Marine Technician. He helps us deploy our sediment traps and drifters and makes sure that we have everything we need to have our cruise run smoothly. He also maintains our CTD and all of its sensors
