Environments of deposition of peat and other plant-derived organic sediments. Theories of origin of coal deposits. Basic concepts of coal composition and classification. Emphasis on studies of organic matter accumulation in modern swamps and marshes (e.g. Okefenokee Swamp, Snuggedy Swamp, Evergaldes, Jamaica, Costa Rica, etc.). Two day field trip to the Okefenokee Swamp.
