Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What test scores do I need for admission to a graduate degree program in Geological Sciences?

The class of 2007 had an average total GRE score of 1170 and 680 on the quantitative portion.

The minimum GRE score for application is a combined score of 1000 (Verbal and quantitative) with a minimum of 550 on the Quantitative portion.

An applicant whose native language is not English is required to submit a satisfactory score on the TOEFL or the IELTS Intl. Academic Course Type 2 exam. The minimum acceptable score on the TOEFL is 80 (internet-based), 230 (computer-based), or 570 (paper-based) or 6.5 on the ILETS.

  1. What if my undergraduate degree is not in Geology?

Our program and research activities encompasses a number of scientific and engineering disciplines.  All graduates with good quantitative skills are welcome to apply.

The Admissions committee considers all aspects of an applicant’s file including undergraduate  and/or graduate GPA,  test scores (GRE, TOEFL if International), research experience, letters of recommendation, a writing sample, future potential and motivation.

If accepted, a student may work with his/her advisor to design a program of study to compensate for any lack of exposure.
