LAB MANUAL:  R. M. Busch, ed. "Laboratory Manual in Physical Geology," 9th ed.

FINAL EXAM:  Friday, 09 December 2011, 9:00 a.m. – PSC 210

COURSE OBJECTIVES: This course introduces the science of Geology, with primary emphasis on the physical processes that form and transform the Earth. The lectures, text, and laboratory assignments are intended to complement one another, so it is imperative that you pay due attention to all three. Textbook readings should be completed prior to the lecture on that topic.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: Upon completion of this course, students should have: (1) a basic understanding of the scientific method, (2) an appreciation for the principle processes involved in Earth evolution, (3) a grasp of the fundamental concepts of plate tectonics, the rock cycle, and geologic time, and (4) a realization of the ways in which Earth science impacts society on a daily basis.

iCLICKER: This course makes extensive use of a classroom response system (called iClicker) to evaluate student progress in mastering concepts. The iClicker remote is a required piece of equipment for this class. You may purchase a unit new or used, or you may borrow one from a friend for the semester, but you must use the same unit consistently once you have registered it for this class. To register your iClicker, point your browser to:

http://www.iclicker.com/support/registeryourclicker/

Please note that it is a clear violation of the USC Honor Code to enter responses on any iClicker other than your own. Bringing an iClicker to class for a classmate and registering responses is not allowed, and violations could result in suspension from the university.

EXAMS: All exams will be based on the lectures and textbook readings. There will be a total of four exams (including the final). Each exam will consist of 50 questions (3 points each) for a total of 150 points. Exam questions may be multiple choice or true or false. The exams will be given during the normal class meetings, with the exception of the Final Exam. The first three exam scores will all be equally weighted, and will each count for 15% of your final course grade (150 points each). Only the make-up exam and the final will be cumulative. There will be one opportunity for a make-up exam in the event you miss an exam for any reason. The make-up exam will be offered on Monday, 21 November 2011 (the Monday before the Thanksgiving Recess). There are no other provisions for make-up exams.

GRADING: The final course grade will be based on a total of 1000 points, as follows:

·         Laboratory grade (300 points = 30%)

o   Attendance and lab completion (50 points = 5%)

o   Weekly quizzes (160 points = 16%)

o   Lab Midterm (45 points = 4.5%)

o   Lab Final (45 points = 4.5%)

·         Midterm exams (450 points = 45%)

o   Midterm Exam 1 (150 points = 15%)

o   Midterm Exam 2 (150 points = 15%)

o   Midterm Exam 3 (150 points = 15%)

·         Final exam (150 points = 15%)

·         Class participation (100 points = 10%)

·         Extra credit (50 points = 5%)

Based on this grading policy, you should be able to determine your grade in the course at any time by adding up the points you have earned, and dividing that by the number of points possible up to that point in the course. Grades will be assigned on a scale as follows:

·         A = 90-100%

·         B = 80-90%

·         C = 65-80%

·         D = 55-65%

·         F = <55%

CELL PHONE POLICY: Use of cellular and mobile phones, pagers, etc., during either lecture or lab time is inappropriate and will not be accepted. Turn off all such electronic communication equipment before entering the lecture hall or laboratory.

ATTENDANCE: Class attendance is one of the most important ways to gain a knowledge of the material in this course. In addition, a significant part of your grade will be based on class attendance and participation. The official USC attendance policy provides that a grade penalty may be exacted for absence from more than 10% of class meetings. While I will not formally enfore this policy, attendance at all lectures is highly recommended, as many exam questions will be based on the lectures. By using your i-Clicker, you will register both your attendance as well as your participation. Attendance at all labs is mandatory. A doctor's note is required for any missed lab.

CHEATING: Cheating will not be tolerated!!  Although it is unpleasant to have to warn against cheating, past problems in classes of this type make it necessary to mention that there is an official USC "Code of Student Academic Responsibility."  Penalties for cheating or aiding someone else in cheating can be very severe, including suspension from the University.

LECTURE NOTES: Lecture notes in PowerPoint will be posted in Blackboard immediately following lecture, and will be available for a short period for you to check your class notes. This service should not be interpreted as an excuse to miss lecture. To access the notes for a given lecture, click on the hyperlink called “Lectures” in the lefthand margin in your GEOL 101 course in Blackboard, and follow the link to Lectures.
