Ecohydrology of Coastal Wetlands: Groundwater flow and transport places important controls on the ecological productivity and zonation of intertidal salt marshes. Groundwater flow is also an important mechanism for the export of nutrients from salt marshes to estuaries. The hydrology of these systems is highly variable in time and space.

Fluid Flow Across the Seafloor: Radium tracer studies indicate that very large volumes of saline porefluids discharge to the ocean, carrying with them significant fluxes of nutrients, carbon, and metals. Studies of submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) that focus near the shoreline have rarely documented groundwater fluxes large enough to support the observed Ra tracer concentrations. Our research focuses further offshore, in the continental shelf of the South Atlantic Bight, where we expect to document fluid and chemical fluxes that exceed those of river discharge. We are currently seeking students for this project.

Hydrogeology of Sedimentary Basins: Deep sedimentary basins are huge "flow-through reactors" for fresh and saline groundwater. Natural tracers can be used to constrain large-scale flow and transport rates in these systems, which have significant implications for sedimentary diagenesis and CO2 sequestration. Moreover, 80% of the sediments in the world are stored in continental shelves, slopes, and rises. Groundwater discharge from these huge flow systems has the potential to impact the chemical oceanographic budgets.
